Can White Noise Cause Hearing Damage in Babies?

What isn't proven

The 85 dBA comparison is an inference from adult occupational standards, not a documented outcome in babies. A separate concern about delayed auditory-cortex development from continuous white-noise exposure comes from a rat study; it hasn't been replicated in human infants, and applying animal-model results directly to babies is a real stretch.

What is proven

That some commercial machines, played at typical settings and distances, output sound levels that would be considered hazardous by existing occupational standards if sustained. That's enough, on its own, to justify the loudness and distance guidance on this site — you don't need a direct infant-hearing-loss study to conclude "don't run it loud and close for hours" is the sensible default.
